Windows That Work: Designing Light, Comfort, and Performance Into Every Home

When you imagine your dream home, windows might not be the first detail you consider.

But for us at M2 Haus, they’re one of the most important design decisions you’ll make.

Because great windows don’t just frame your view, they shape how your home feels to live in. They influence how much you’ll spend on energy, how comfortable your spaces are throughout the seasons, and even how connected you feel to the outdoors.

That’s why window and glass door design isn’t just about looks, it’s also about meeting strict performance and safety standards.

The Standards Behind Your Windows

In Australia, all buildings must follow the National Construction Code (NCC). It sets out rules to make sure homes are built safely, efficiently, and suited to local conditions.

Under the NCC, there's the Building Code of Australia (BCA), which includes technical requirements for how windows and glass doors must be designed and installed. These rules account for things like wind, climate, bushfire risk, and even what might happen if someone accidentally walks into a glass panel.

Specifically:

  • AS 2047 is the Australian Standard for windows and external glazed doors in buildings. It covers things like air and water penetration, strength, and resistance to wind and impact.
  • AS 1288 covers glass selection and installation. It applies to other types of glazed assemblies and ensures the right glass is chosen for the right location.

At M2 Haus, every window and glass door we specify and install complies with these standards, because how your home performs and protects you matters just as much as how it looks.

High-Performance Homes - Which Glass Best Suits You?

There’s a quiet kind of brilliance in choosing the right glass. It’s not dramatic, but it changes everything. Poor-quality glass can allow heat to pour in during summer and leak out during winter.

We work with clients every day who want homes that stay naturally cool in summer, warm in winter, and feel calm, quiet, and protected. And glass selection plays a surprisingly large role in achieving that balance.

Here’s what we walk through when guiding clients on their glazing choices:

1. Double Glazing: Your First Line of Defence

Think of double glazing like an insulation layer for your windows. Two panes of glass, sealed with air or gas in between, act as a thermal buffer, keeping heat in during winter and out in summer.

Why it matters:

  • Keeps warmth inside in winter and blocks heat in summer.
  • Reduces energy bills by easing reliance on air-conditioning.
  • Minimises outside noise, ideal for both coastal homes and town-based builds.

Along the coast line or in and around high-traffic areas, we recommend double glazed for a more comfortable home year-round, with less reliance on artificial heating and cooling. It also softens street noise, great for busy areas or homes near the coast.

2. Low-E Glass: Smarter Solar Control

Low-E (or “low emissivity”) glass has a nearly invisible coating that reflects heat while still letting light in.

For quiet residential areas on the Mid North Coast, we often recommend Low-E2 or Low-E3 coatings depending on the home’s orientation and how much glass is being used.

  • Low-E2 is great for balanced performance. Lets in around 35–40% of solar heat, and 60–70% of natural daylight. Ideal for balanced performance across seasons.
  • Low-E3 offers extra solar protection, especially valuable on west-facing windows where summer heat is most intense. Allows just 25–30% of solar heat, with 50–60% of daylight getting through. Best for areas with strong afternoon sun or hotter climates.

Why it matters:

  • Tailors solar heat gain for the Mid North Coast’s sun-rich conditions.
  • Allows light in while deflecting unwanted heat.

  • Both types also block 95–99% of UV rays, helping protect your floors, furniture, and artwork from fading over time.

3. Toned Glass: For Glare and Privacy

Toned glass, usually grey, bronze, or green, absorbs more of the sun’s heat and glare. We often use it sparingly and strategically, say, on a western façade where afternoon sun is strongest.

It offers a bit more privacy too, which can be helpful on exposed suburban or coastal blocks.

Why it matters:

  • Cost-effective for solar control.
  • Useful for west-facing or unshaded windows.

But It’s Not Just About the Glass

Glass is just one part of a bigger picture. The frames, seals, placement, and shading all work together to create a home that performs.

That’s why at M2 Haus, we approach window and glass-door selection and installation with the same care we bring to every other element of your build. We consider how you live, where you live, and what kind of lifestyle performance you want over the long term.

You won’t notice good glazing when it’s working. You’ll simply enjoy a home that feels comfortable, quiet, and calm, without constantly adjusting the air-con or closing blinds.

That’s the kind of considered living we build for.

The M2 Haus Approach

At M2 Haus, we specify glazing that complements both architectural intention and the climate-specific performance requirements of the Mid North Coast. Every choice is deliberate, balancing views, light, thermal mass, and energy targets.

Because meeting code requirements is just the start, we go further, ensuring windows and doors are installed above standards and with German craftsmanship. Frames and seals are detailed to prevent drafts and reduce leakage, for lasting comfort and sustainability.
